“PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE”
By Red Skelton
The following words were spoken by the late Red
Skelton on his television program as he related the
story of his teacher, Mr. Laswell, who felt his
students had come to think of the Pledge of Allegiance
as merely something to recite in class each day. Now,
more than ever, listen to the meaning of these words.
I – me, an individual, a committee of one.
Pledge – dedicate all of my worldly goods to
give without self pity.
Allegiance – my love and my devotion.
To the flag – our standard, Old Glory, a symbol
of freedom. Wherever she waves, there’s respect
because your loyalty has given her a dignity that
shouts freedom is everybody’s job.
Of the United – That means that we have all
come together.
States – individual communities that have
united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual
communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all
divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a
common purpose, and that’s love for country.
Of America and to the republic – a state in
which sovereign power is invested in representatives
chosen by the people to govern. And government is the
people and it’s from the people to the leaders, not
from the leaders to the people.
For which it stands, one nation – one nation,
meaning “so blessed by God”
Indivisible – incapable of being divided.
With liberty – which is freedom – the right of
power to live one’s own life without threats, fear or
some sort of retaliation.
And Justice – the principle of quality of
dealing fairly with others.
For all – which means, boys and girls, it’s as
much your country as it is mine.
Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to
our country and two words have been added to the
pledge of Allegiance…
Under God – Wouldn’t it be a pity if someone
said that is a prayer and that would be eliminated
from schools too?
God Bless America!
Please take a moment to appreciate what this pledge
means to us all and our freedom!
We should never take it for granted.

“Special Thoughts and Prayers”
On Wednesday, June 26, a special board meeting was
called to discuss making a donation to the victims'
families from Metro Church. Bill Peace made a motion
for Noon Garland to donate $500.00 to Metro Church
benefiting the families of the bus crash victims,
specifically to be used for funeral expenses. Also,
donations will be accepted from the individual club
members and any other outside sources available. The
$500.00 donation will be taken out of the grants and
allocation budget for 2001-2002. Brian Shepherd
seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
Thanks for All You Have Done, Gary!
Gary Bentley will be leaving the Board after serving
three two-year terms as Fundraising Director. Thank
you for going the extra mile for the club. You will be
missed but I’m sure you will still be extremely active
for us. Thanks Again.

“Oops”
Many, Many Apologies…
This editor, inadvertently, left off our Director of
Community Service - Kaye Schaum from the new 2002-2003
Board listing last issue. Please note, Kaye will
continue her service to our club again this year.
Thank you Kaye.

Special Thanks Goes Out to Camille!
Please join me in saying “Thank You” to our Past
President, Camille Ussery. Camille will be leaving our
Board this year to focus on her daughter’s senior year
of high school. However, Camille will always be ready
to serve when asked. Thanks for everything you have
done for our club.
