RAMBLIN’S
FROM THE RANGE BY RATTAN
Another
month has gone by and if you noticed we have several
new members, +6.
I would like to take this opportunity to
welcome each and every one of you.
If there is anything I can do, please do not
hesitate to call.
We
have several events coming up in the near future. First we have the FFA livestock show coming on March 25.
Any and all of you who can show support for
Garland’s Future Farmers of America on March 25,
1995, please do so.
On March 29th, the Fifth Wednesday will be at
Bobby Boyd’s Restaurant on Saturn Road at 12:00
Noon. In
April, we have a couple of events.
First of all on April 1, 1995, we have Taste of
Garland sponsored by Crimestoppers.
On the 8th of April, we have an opportunity to
work on a project for Habitat which will be an all day
event and we should be able to have a lot of fun and
do a lot of good.
Just
a quick reminder of another event coming up on May 6,
1995, the Big D Charity Horse Show.
I have given Jack our preference which was the
evening show and he has confirmed the fact that we
will be the volunteers in this time slot.
On May 15, 1995, we have what we hope to be the
largest net fund raiser of the year, the golf
tournament. Please
see Lee Adams for your tee times and your hole sponsor
money.
I
would like to thank all of you for your participation
in the survey. This
survey gave us an indication of how the membership
feels about several critical areas.
We will use this information to better serve
the membership and the community.
We will be asking the membership to participate
in another survey that will deal with the topic of
membership participation and club direction.
We on the Board feel very strongly and are very
sensitive to the needs and desires of our membership.
If there is ever a time that you as a member
feel the need to discuss something with me personally
or with the entire Board, please feel free to set a
time and we will respond.

HABITAT
VOLUNTEER DAY
WHEN:
April 8, 1995
WHERE:
At the Habitat house in Garland - either at 502
E. Linda or 219 Southwood.
We will notify you which one they are working
at before that Saturday.
WHAT
AND WHY: Habitat
for Humanity of Greater Garland, Inc. is an affiliate
of Habitat for Humanity International.
It is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian
housing organization.
The purpose is to build and renovate decent,
affordable housing.
The houses are then sold to those in need at no
profit and with no interest charged.
The houses are built with tax-deductible
donations using volunteer and skilled labor.
The homeowners who are selected by Habitat from
applications from all segments of the community are
required to contribute 350 hours of “sweat equity”
labor and to make a 2% down payment before closing on
their house.
Habitat
volunteers have the opportunity to work with an
organization that helps people help themselves.
In doing so, they can make a difference in the
lives of hard working low income families and to help
break the cycle of poverty by providing a sense of
permanence and belonging to the community.
This reduced mobility enables the children to
remain in the same school and gives them a sense of
stability and security.
Garland
Habitat has 13 families selected for homes in 1995. They want to have 25 by 1997.
The value of hours that volunteers work is used
to match federal grants.
The volunteers paint, hammer, caulk, texture,
clean, insulate, roof, and serve on various
committees.
